Original oil painting Scintillements sur la Seine (1940–1950) by Notre-Dame de Paris, petit matin doré, in neo-impressionist style, depicting Notre-Dame and the Seine with the Pont au Double in the foreground, mounted on its original French 12 F stretcher (61 × 50 cm), signed by hand, in good condition, with a red monogram CB lower left, offered without a frame.
Description from the seller
Representation of the monumental silhouette of Notre-Dame de Paris along the Seine, with the old Pont au Double in the foreground.
The work is characterized by a generous pictorial material, worked with visible brushstrokes, and by a deliberately subdued palette of grays, browns, greens and cream tones.
The broad bright sky contrasts with the dark volumes of Notre-Dame and gives the whole a sober, slightly melancholic Parisian atmosphere.
The synthetic treatment of the architecture, the water and the reflections gives the composition a modern and expressive handwriting. The canvas bears the monogram “CB” in red at the bottom left. It is mounted on its original French frame 12 F, corresponding to 61 × 50 cm, and is offered without a frame.
The work is in good general condition; on the back, traces of old humidity.
Beautiful evocation of one of Paris’s most emblematic monuments, interesting both as an urban landscape painting and as a representation of Notre-Dame.
