Zsolnay Asymmetrical Ribbon Vase – Green Eosin
A distinctive Zsolnay asymmetrical ribbon vase, finished with an intense, metallic and iridescent green eosin glaze, in flawless collector’s condition.
The vase reflects the characteristic organic design language of the Zsolnay Art Nouveau tradition. Sculptural, tendril-like ribbons emerge from the rounded body and curve differently on either side. The asymmetrical composition is completed by a flowing, undulating rim reminiscent of a flower in bloom. One of the most striking aspects of the design is that its silhouette and sculptural character continuously change when viewed from different angles.
The Zsolnay Manufactory was founded in Pécs, Hungary, in 1853. Under the direction of Vilmos Zsolnay, the factory became one of the most important centres of Hungarian and European artistic ceramics by the end of the 19th century. Its international reputation was established not only through distinctive artistic design, but also through innovative ceramic technologies developed by the manufactory.
The best known of these is eosin, developed during the 1890s. This special reduction-firing technique creates a metallic, iridescent surface whose appearance changes depending on the angle and intensity of the light. Eosin is therefore much more than a conventional coloured glaze: shades of green, gold, bronze, blue and purple can appear across the surface of a single object.
This particular vase displays an especially attractive combination of deep emerald green with golden iridescent reflections. Light interacts differently with the rounded body, raised ribbon elements and undulating rim, allowing the eosin glaze to emphasize the sculptural and organic character of the form.
Due to their distinctive appearance and technically sophisticated glazing process, Zsolnay eosin ceramics are among the manufactory’s internationally best-known and most collectible decorative works.
