Fascinating oil on panel by the Venetian painter Zaccaria Dal Bò (Venice, 1872–1935), a work characterized by a particularly rich pictorial matter and a lively Venetian setting.

The painting depicts an elegant outdoor scene, probably a garden or a monumental Venetian area, animated by small figures in eighteenth-century dress. In the foreground, a couple stands out: the male figure with a wide tricorne and a rich red-crimson robe constitutes immediately the chromatic focal point of the composition, flanked by a second figure dressed in darker tones. In the background, other figures stroll beside the garden wall, interspersed with pilasters topped by statues.

Particularly evocative is the contrast between the warm luminosity of the wall and the ground and the dense, deep vegetation, built through greens, blues, grays and pinkish touches. The sky, barely visible between the treetops, is resolved through swift light brushstrokes that give movement and brightness to the scene.

One of the most interesting aspects of the work is precisely the strongly tactile painting technique: color is applied with dense, substantial, clearly perceptible brushstrokes, almost modeled on the surface. In close detail, one can appreciate Dal Bò’s freedom of gesture: trees, statues, architectures and characters are not defined through meticulous drawing, but take shape thanks to the juxtaposition of short, vigorous touches of color. The result is an immediate and atmospheric painting, particularly effective when viewed from the proper distance.

The choice of eighteenth-century costumes also lends the work an evocative, almost theatrical character, recalling the imaginary of gallant Venice, aristocratic strolls, gardens and the cosmopolitan life of the Serenissima.

The work is signed at the bottom right “Z. Dal Bò,” a clearly legible signature well integrated into the pictorial surface.

The artist

Zaccaria Dal Bò was born in Venice on December 13, 1872, and died there on September 29, 1935. He trained at the Istituto di Belle Arti di Venezia and was active in the lively Venetian artistic milieu from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th.

His career was accompanied by participation in important exhibitions: he took part in several editions of the Venice Biennale, including those of 1903, 1907, 1909 and 1910. In 1907 he presented Paese triste, in 1909 La neve and in 1910 Fondamenta a Burano and Un angolo del lago. He also participated in the Universal Exposition of the Centenary in Buenos Aires in 1910 and in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts at Brera in 1912, exhibiting also outside Italy.

Historical documentation also testifies to Dal Bò as an excellent draftsman: in the context of the Venetian exhibitions of 1913 are recalled works such as Rio San Rocco and Palazzo Van Axel. His production includes mainly landscapes, Venetian views and scenery, in which the city and the Veneto territory are interpreted through a free, luminous painting sensitive to atmospheric effects.

The painting presented here is therefore an interesting example of Zaccaria Dal Bò’s production, in which the charm of historical Venice is reinterpreted through a decidedly modern and tactile brushwork.

The panel is enhanced by a gilded and shaped wooden frame, of antique taste, which pleasingly accompanies the warm tones of the work.
