Description from the seller
Zsolnay Eosin Decorative Jug – Sándor Apáti Abt, Model No. 7279, Original Design from 1904
A remarkable large Zsolnay eosin decorative jug, based on Sándor Apáti Abt’s model No. 7279, originally designed in 1904.
The form is a characteristic example of Hungarian Art Nouveau from the turn of the 20th century. Its pear-shaped body is decorated with raised, stylised Hungarian floral and folk-inspired motifs, reflecting the Zsolnay factory’s distinctive interpretation of traditional Hungarian ornamentation during the Art Nouveau period.
One of the most characteristic features of the design is the tall, angular handle, which becomes an integral sculptural element of the composition.
The surface is covered with Zsolnay’s famous iridescent eosin glaze. Depending on the light and viewing angle, the glaze displays striking shades of deep green, turquoise, blue and gold, with a strong metallic iridescence.
Model 7279 is a documented historical Zsolnay design. An original example from 1904 is preserved in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest and is attributed to Sándor Apáti Abt.
