Pencil portrait in profile by Dutch artist Ernest Sigismund Witkamp jr. (1854–1897), signed by hand at the lower right, dating from the 19th century, with a 46 × 35 cm image area and a passe-partout opening of 21 × 27 cm.
Description from the seller
The drawing shown is a beautiful graphite portrait in profile, bottom right hand-signed by the Dutch artist Ernest Sigismund "Ernst" Witkamp Jr. (1854–1897).
Ernst Witkamp Jr. was a prominent Dutch painter, illustrator and etcher who was active mainly in Amsterdam. He studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten and was one of the early top students under the well-known director August Allebé. Although he was versatile and also captured landscapes and cityscapes, in the late 19th century in Amsterdam he was particularly known for his very refined genre and figure works and his striking portraits. From 1894 until his early death in 1897 he was also the conservator of Amsterdam’s Museum Fodor.
The drawing shows a man with a full beard, a bowler hat (or similar type of hat) and a knotted bow tie, rendered with a remarkable eye for texture and light (chiaroscuro). This type of portrait study seamlessly aligns with the realistic and academic tradition of the Amsterdam School at the end of the 19th century. In the bottom right is clearly visible the handwritten signature: E.S. Witkamp Jr.
Inside passe-partout dimensions: 21 x 27 cm. The drawing sheet is presumably a little larger. Here and there minimal light brown discoloration of the paper.
