Very decorative painting. It concerns a church interior (church landscape) painted by a skilled artist and signed: n. J. Bosboom (see photos). This means that a very skilled painter painted this work in the style of Johannes Bosboom (1817–1891). Bosboom was one of the leading figures of the Hague School. He became world-famous for his tranquil, atmospheric church interiors in which the rendering of sunlight, shadow, and the monumental space were central.
The painting without the frame measures 33 cm high and 22.5 cm wide. With the frame, the height is 51 cm and the width 31.5 cm. The total weight is 2.3 kg. It is a painting executed with oil on panel. A nice detail is that on the back of the panel there is a label from the frame maker and art dealer who framed the painting and probably also sold it: Hofleverancier J.A. van Gorijn. The Van Gorijn label on the back proves that this panel was somewhere between roughly 1880 and 1920 in the Breda mirror and frame factory. Van Gorijn at that time was not only a frame maker, but also acted as an art dealer.
The painting thus dates from around 1900 (1880–1920). It is an oil painting; oil on panel. The style is Dutch School.
The painting still looks good. At the top of the painting there are a few white specks, from which it is difficult to tell whether they are damages or just paint (see photo), but that is minimal. The frame is almost entirely intact, with only here and there a spot where the plaster is visible. Van Gorijn was known for his wooden frames with rich ornaments that were gilded with leaf gold. Because the color of the frame is somewhat reddish, it is probably decorated with red gold, an alloy of gold and copper.
The painting will be carefully packed and insured for shipment.
