Rare and important original period scientific excerpt from 1843 by the famous German chemist and mineralogist Eilhard Mitscherlich, entitled "Über ein Goniometer".
The text documents the official scientific mémoire presented by the author at the prestigious Akademie der Wissenschaften (Academy of Sciences) on January 9, 1843.
In this historic treatise, Mitscherlich describes in detail the application, evolution and technical refinements related to the use of the goniometer for the angular measurement of crystal faces (crystallography).
Of extreme scientific interest is the description of the optical systems employed, including small telescopes and microscopic lenses (the lenses of the famous optician Schiek are mentioned) to optimize sharpness and the reflection of light on the minute crystal surfaces.
