Roses blanches, an oil painting by the Catalan school from Spain, dating to 1980–1990, 84 × 73 cm, signed and sold with frame as an original edition.
Description from the seller
An attractive 20th-century Catalan school still life of floral nature, featuring an elegant bouquet of white roses arranged in a vase on a table.
The composition responds to the important tradition of flower and still life painting developed by numerous Catalan artists during the 20th century. The bouquet occupies the center of the scene and unfolds vertically through a balanced succession of flowers, buds, leaves, and stems.
The white roses, painted with broad and visible brushstrokes, constitute the main luminous focus. The artist builds the petals with different shades of white, cream, ivory, and soft pinkish tones, avoiding an overly meticulous treatment and privileging the pictorial impression of the whole.
The vegetation presents a more dynamic execution. Deep greens, emeralds, and blueish tones overlay through small brushstrokes, creating an appealing contrast with the clarity of the flowers.
The dark vase, positioned at the center of the table, provides stability to the composition. Its surface is modeled with green, gray, white, and blue reflections that suggest volume without resorting to an excessively detailed description.
Particularly interesting is the treatment of the background, constructed by a succession of blues, grays, and whites applied with loose brushwork, creating a vibrant surface that allows the silhouette of the bouquet to stand out clearly. The table, resolved in light tones, further reinforces the overall luminosity of the painting.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work can be related to the post-impressionist and figurative Catalan tradition of the 20th century, here characterized by the freedom of brushwork, the importance given to color, and a direct and spontaneous interpretation of the subject.
Thus, the painting combines a classic still-life composition with a modern and markedly pictorial execution, resulting in a luminous, balanced, and decorative work.
The work is signed in the lower left corner.
