La Barbe Bleue. Illustrations by Henry Lemarié for Charles Perrault, 1st Edition Thus, softback with slipcase, French language, published in 1949, 25 pages, 26 x 17 cm, Paris: Jean Porson, illustrated children's literature in Vélin de Rives with colour title and wood-engraved miniatures.
Description from the seller
This is the second volume in Porson's celebrated trilogy of Perrault tales illustrated by Henry Lemarié — La Belle au bois dormant (1948), La Barbe Bleue (1949), and Cendrillon (1950), collectively titled 'Histoire du temps passé ou Contes'.
The book is one of the copies on Vélin de Rives, issued in loose sheets under a wrapper with the title printed on the upper cover, housed in the publisher's own illustrated clamshell presentation box, the case front bearing a large colour illustration by Lemarié. There is a little rubbing to the edge of the box, but overall in very good condition.
Beautiful woodblock illustrations.
25 pages, 6 unnumbered pages, all very fresh. Full page engraved colour title and 24 wood engraved colour miniatures.
The limitation was 2000 copies, although it has been suggested that far fewer were actually produced.
Also enclosed in the box is a copy of the prospectus for "La Belle au Bois Dormant". This attractive prospectus holds two parts within it. A coloured section with 16 (numbered and unnumbered) pages including covers. This includes a coloured cover, three large colour illustrations and a final vignette. There is also a second identical prospectus, but in a b/w state. Far from inferior, the illustrations are rather striking in black line drawing.
