Description from the seller
Spanish Expressionist School – 20th Century
The Forest Path
Oil on panel. Large format. Signed.
Interesting work belonging to the Spanish school of the 20th century, made within a markedly expressionist language, in which the representation of the landscape is transformed through an energetic brushstroke, an intense use of color, and a strong interest in light effects.
The composition represents a wooded landscape crossed by a path, flanked by large trees that occupy almost the entire height of the painting. In the background emerges a mountainous formation, built with successive brushstrokes of blues, purples, whites and grayish tones that contrast with the density and darkness of the vegetation.
One of the most outstanding aspects of the painting is the treatment of the light that penetrates between the trees. Yellows, ochres, whites and golds burst through the large dark trunks, creating strong chiaroscuro contrasts and guiding the gaze toward the interior of the forest. The path thus acts as a depth axis and as the main luminous focal point of the composition.
The execution deliberately moves away from naturalistic representation. Trees, vegetation and mountains are constructed with broad, overlapping and gestural brushstrokes, sometimes close to abstraction. The artist dispenses with meticulous description to focus on conveying the intensity and atmosphere of the landscape.
The work can be related to certain trends of 20th-century expressionist landscape painting, in which nature ceases to be merely a descriptive motif to become a vehicle for experimentation with color, matter and gesture. There are also affinities with lyrical abstraction, especially in those areas where vegetation and rock formations are reduced to blotches, strokes and chromatic relationships.
The verticality of the trunks establishes a powerful compositional rhythm, while the freer and diagonal brushstrokes of the canopies and mountains introduce movement. The opposition between deep greens, blacks and violets, on the one hand, and yellows, whites and luminous earth tones, on the other, intensifies the dramatic character of the scene.
The result is a work with strong visual presence and great dynamism, where figuration and abstraction coexist without the reading of the depicted motif disappearing. The forest remains perfectly recognizable, but has been reinterpreted from an essentially expressionist sensibility.
In view of its formal characteristics, it can be cataloged within the Spanish expressionist school of the 20th century, with elements close to gestural landscape painting and lyrical abstraction.
Large-format work, a circumstance that especially enhances the immersive and monumental character of the composition.
The work is signed in the lower right corner.
The condition should be assessed from the photographs provided, which form an integral part of the description and allow appreciation of signs of age and use.
The frame is included free of charge as a gift, without attributing commercial value and without being considered an integral part of the work. Any damage suffered by the frame during transport will not be a reason for complaint.
