Description from the seller
Magnificent and rare pebble vase (or flower-spike gourd) in chamotte stoneware, made by the famous French potter Jacques POUCHAIN (1927-2015) in Dieulefit, emblematic of design and modernist ceramics of the 1960s/1970s.
This unique piece perfectly expresses the artist's quest for balance between organic forms and geometry. It features a remarkable asymmetrical work with a double opening at the top.
Face A: A complex, graphic pattern of geometric incisions in an ethnic/cubist style, filled with a milky, crackled glaze.
Face B: A clean, smooth, satin surface coated with a brown iron glaze (Tenmoku-type) with deep metallic reflections, subtly revealing pyrites and the rough texture of the clay.
Signature:
The piece bears at its base the intertwined monogram "JP", engraved very fluidly and cursively directly in the mass, a signature characteristic of the artist on his finest stoneware pieces.
