A Moon Held on Trembling Legs begins with an unlikely balance. A small, pale elephant, round and gentle in its form, is raised high above the ground on legs so long, so thin, broken into so many joints, that they seem to belong to another creature entirely. At the end of its lifted trunk rests a moon, pale and heavy, held in place by nothing more than patience and impossibly delicate limbs.

There is something quietly moving in this image of tension. The legs that carry the weight look frail enough to tremble, and still they do not buckle. The elephant, an animal we associate with memory, loyalty and enormous physical presence, is reimagined here as something almost weightless, poised on the edge of collapse, and yet it holds on.

It becomes a picture about carrying what is precious, and about the quiet courage that requires. The moon can be read as memory, as distance, as a burden of love too large to set down. The elephant does not reach for it or chase it. It simply holds it aloft, high above the dark, on legs that were never meant to bear so much weight, and somehow do.

Nothing in this work is painted, printed or inked. The image is built from depth and absence, a controlled emptiness within the surface that lets light pass through and return as form. In flat, even light the work can feel almost still, a pale shape suspended in darkness.

Change the light, change the angle, and the trembling legs and the held moon seem to breathe. From across a room the piece reads as one quiet, monumental gesture, a single figure balanced against the dark. Close up, that same figure dissolves into a field of depth, countless small shifts in the surface that only resolve into the elephant and its moon when caught at the right angle.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.

Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence.

I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time.
