Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - Void. A Silence Wound in White

Out of black comes a face wound entirely in white, the gauze pulled so close around the skull that nothing remains but the memory of features. Eyes, mouth, the line of a jaw, all present only as suggestion, pressed up from beneath the wrap like a shape trying to surface.

The binding is total and yet oddly tender. It does not disfigure so much as hush. Every seam and fold of cloth becomes a kind of skin of its own, catching light along the ridges of the head and letting it drop into shadow at the throat, so the whole face reads as a study in exposure withheld.

There is a quiet violence in being wrapped this completely, and an equal quiet calm. The eyes are closed beneath the fabric, the mouth sealed but not straining, as if this stillness were chosen rather than imposed. A wound, a rest, a waiting, all folded into the same white.

In Void's language this image is not laid down but drawn out of depth, no paint, no print, no ink, only the interplay of surface and shadow that lets a face emerge from nothing at all. Seen from across a room the work reads as a single pale mass against darkness, monumental and silent. Close in, it opens into a field of fine depth, every fold of the gauze its own quiet event of light.

The bandage becomes a symbol as much as a subject: identity held back, protected or erased, a self suspended between concealment and the moment before it is finally seen.

About the Artist

My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio.

As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together.

My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create.

Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence.

I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time.
