Artist Statement:
"This painting is an exploration of the dissolution of form and the uncontrollable energy of nature. My intention was not to create a photorealistic representation of a sailing vessel, but to capture the visceral experience of sailing at its most extreme, where the physical structure merges with the surroundings.
The work features a classic sailing ship that seems to be disintegrating or transforming. I have used a heavy impasto technique and a spatula to build and deconstruct the hull and the sails. The earth tones, off-whites, and touches of rust, applied with a rough texture, evoke weathered wood, salt, and the wear of time, suggesting that the ship is part of the landscape as much as the sea.
The environment is a vibrant, textured blue sky full of gestural motion, colliding violently with a dark, deep sea at the bottom. This clash of colors and textures creates dramatic tension, where the ship is a focal point of light trapped in a maelstrom. It is a meditation on the fragility of human construction in the face of the eternity of the ocean and the sky.
