Matthieu or Matthijs van Plattenberg (Antwerp 1608 - Paris 1660)
Notable Flemish painter who painted and was mainly a master of landscapes and seascapes. Settled in Paris, he became "peintre du Roy pour les Mers". He rarely signed and/or dated his works. In the Paris period he used the names Matthieu Platte-Montaigne or Platte-Montagne and his works show close similarities with those of Pieter Mulier the Younger, the Cavalier Tempesta or the Tempest. His son Nicolas Platte-Montagne (born 1631 - died 1706), pupil of Ph. de Champagne, was appreciated as a portraitist. Notable is the Portrait where master and pupil depicted themselves together (Rotterdam, Museum Boymans - van Beuningen).
