"This painting is a tribute to speed, elegance, and the tension of the open sea. My aim has not been to simply depict a regatta, but to capture the visceral experience of competing against the elements during the changing light. It is a study of movement and the precarious balance between human technology and the uncontrollable forces of nature.
The composition features three sailboats sailing close-hauled, battling a raging sea. I have used a textured impasto technique for the waves, employing deep blues and foamy whites that almost seem to emerge from the canvas, conveying the physical force of the water and the constant splashing on the deck.
The dramatic focal point lies in the hulls of the boats and their tilting sails. Far from white, the sails are tinted with the colors of the sky at sunset: bright yellows, intense pinks, and deep mauves, created through glazes and layering of paint that suggest the reflection of the setting sun on the canvas. This contrast between the warm color of the sky and the cool blue of the sea underscores the moment’s intensity.
