Corpus Christi carved in boxwood from the 17th century, Spain, a full-round statue in a Spanish Mannerist style, measuring 28 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, in good condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
Corpus Christi in carved boxwood – 17th century
Companion to Alonso Berruguete or Juan Martínez Montañés. Description: Splendid and rare Corpus Christi in carved, round-bone boxwood, a masterful testimony to the fervor and technical virtuosity of Spanish religious sculpture of the 16th century (Mannerist Period / Beginning of the Golden Century).
The work is distinguished by its great expressive power, characteristic of late Renaissance Spanish religious statuary: face marked by suffering, half-closed eyes, slightly open mouth, nervous anatomy with protruding ribs and strongly modeled abdomen.
The treatment of the hair and beard, deeply sculpted in wavy and curled strands, is particularly remarkable. The loincloth, tied at the hip, presents an animated drapery with deeply carved folds.
In its expressiveness, the elongation of the body, and the vigor of the sculpture, this Christ is part of the Spanish Mannerist tradition developed in the 16th century, in the wake of Alonso Berruguete and his circle.
Condition: good old patina. Arms missing at the shoulders, with visible mortises for assembly. Old cracks and age-related wood damage, notably on the chest and loincloth.
Presented on a modern black metal base.
Beautiful piece from the High Period, with a particularly strong sculptural presence.
The photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
