Important 20th century literary work by Cocteau.
A first reprint (so second edition) of this illustrated diary / memoir of Cocteau's opium withdrawal, written during and after a stay at a clinic in 1928–29. It's one of his most personal and widely regarded prose works — part confessional, part aesthetic / philosophical meditation, illustrated throughout with his own distinctive b/w line drawings (over 40 in-text / hors-texte illustrations by Cocteau himself).
Original printed wrappers (pink with black lettering), as issued. Faded to spine. Sight marks of tape residue to inside end papers from clean covering. A few small, neat pencil annotations.
First edition, ordinary / unnumbered copy (outside the limited numbered issues on Japon impérial, vélin pur fil du Marais, or alfa)
