Original color woodcut by Okiie Hashimoto (1899–1993), motif: Nijo Castle (二条城), Kyoto
Hashimoto is one of the leading figures of the Japanese Sōsaku-Hanga movement ("Creative Prints") and was president of the Japan Print Association from 1974 to 1979.
The sheet shows a characteristic architectural or temple motif typical for Hashimoto, in his reduced, decorative formal language. Pencil autographed "Okiie Hashimoto", dated 1957 and numbered 25/50. Red artist's seal in the upper left; Japanese title at the bottom edge of the sheet.

Provenance:
Acquired between 1958 and 1961 directly in Japan by Wilhelm Haas (1896–1981), German ambassador to Japan. Subsequently owned by his son Dr. Gottfried Haas (1943–2016), Ambassador a. D. Since then continuously in family ownership. The biographies of both previous owners are publicly documented (Wikipedia).
