Gaze belongs to the Remnants series, a project devoted to what remains when image, identity and matter undergo a transformative process.
In this work the face emerges only partially from the surface, like a fragment left after progressive subtraction. At the center of the composition the gaze remains: direct, intense, immediately recognizable. The face’s incompleteness creates a tension between what disappears and what continues to be present.
The work is made on cotton canvas with natural pigments extracted and manually treated, including pomegranate, walnut and other tones obtained from plant materials. The pigments are subjected to a specific textile treatment that allows their penetration and fixation in the fiber, making the color stably imprinted on the fabric and resistant over time. Charcoal completes the composition, while drips, traces and irregularities of the material intentionally remain visible.
The palette of ochre, earth tones and black, traversed by the cool tone of the eye, creates a balance between raw material and figurative representation.
Gaze thus interprets one of the central themes of Remnants: identity not as a complete and defined image, but as something that persists precisely through what is erased, consumed and transformed.
