Description from the seller
Mysterious Deaths in History: Rare 1-volume large in-8 paperback, 540 pages + iv Table and Legend of Engravings - Pleasant copy.
[Tirage à 110 exemplaires sur vergé de Hollande (81)]
--------
Cabanès examines the circumstances of the death of famous figures — kings, queens and princes — seeking to compare historical accounts, testimonies and the described symptoms with the medical knowledge of his time. The work covers in particular the period from Charlemagne to Napoleon III.
--------
Memoirs of Madame de Staal-de-Launay, gentleman-in-waiting to the Duchess of Maine, in 1 volume in-8 full leather, gilt fore-edge, xxviii-387 pages - Fine copy.
--------
Particularly interesting testimony on the court and French society between the end of Louis XIV’s reign and the Regency. Staal-Delaunay mentions in particular:
- her childhood and education;
- her entry into the aristocratic world;
- the court of Sceaux and the Duchess of Maine, whom she became a maid of honour to;
- court intrigues and the Cellamare conspiracy;
- her experience of the Bastille, where she was imprisoned in 1718;
- the characters and manners of early 18th-century high society.
The interest of the book lies less in a systematic political chronicle than in the very fine and often ironic personal view that Staal-Delaunay offers on power relations, dependence, ambitions and human characters. A nineteenth-century critic rightly highlighted the subtlety of her psychological observation.
--------
Memoir of the Duke of Lauzun, second edition, 2 volumes in 1 volume, n-16 half-binding, xx-180; 221 pages, speckled edges - Pleasant copy.
--------
The Duke of Lauzun (1747-1793), Armand-Louis de Gontaut-Biron, is a figure of the French nobility at the end of the 18th century, famous for his military career, his relationships with the court and his role during the French Revolution.
--------
Rare copy in 1 large volume in-8 paperback, 540 pages + iv Table and Legend of Engravings - Nice copy.
[Print run to 110 copies on laid Holland (81)]
