Characterful antique oil painting from 1917, titled or inspired by the then-popular theme ‘Bulldog with chickens at the feeding trough’ (originally after a motif by E. Dorno).
The painting shows a humorous genre scene in which a sturdy bulldog somewhat dejectedly watches as a rooster and a bunch of cheeky chickens finish off his feeding trough. A beautiful and warm scene full of detail, painted in warm autumn tones.
Bottom left signed by the maker S. Althuis and dated 1917.
The painting is still in the authentic, gold-colored pearl-border frame from the early 20th century, plaster and woodwork, and is painted on hardboard.
On the back there is the original, historic kartel-edge label from the famous Spiegelfabriek & Kunsthandel S. de Vogel at Wortelhaven in Leeuwarden. This gives the painting a lovely, traceable Frisian history (well over 100 years old!).
The painting is in good condition; the frame has undergone a minor repair, see last photo.
