Antonio Lonza (1846–1918) - Parte III - Cap. VII

Fascinating and rare monochrome watercolor on paper by the Triestine artist Antonio Lonza (1846–1918), a painter of great success celebrated for his savory genre scenes, historical reconstructions, and costume compositions.

The work, executed with a refined technique of ink wash and grey/black watercolor shaded, depicts a moment of high dramatic tension inside a bourgeois salon or a private club at the turn of the century.

Four characters animate the composition: a gentleman in tails with a top hat in hand makes his entrance from the left; in the center, two men argue animatedly, focusing attention on a mysterious chest opened on the table; to the right, an elderly and ill man with a conspicuous bandage on his head watches the scene.

The handling of chiaroscuro and the psychological rendering of the faces demonstrate Lonza's extraordinary graphic skill, placing this work alongside the great tradition of contemporary literary illustrations for penny dreadfuls, detective stories, or illustrated magazines of the late nineteenth century.
