Oiseau stylisé – Étude décorative Art Déco, an original 1940 artwork in pastel, crayon and graphite on paper by Paule Ingrand and Max Ingrand, France, in the Art Déco style, 30 × 23.5 cm, depicting animals, signed, non-framed, bon état.
Description from the seller
Paule Ingrand (1910-1997) & Max Ingrand (1908-1969)
Stylized Bird – Decorative Study, Art Deco
circa 1940-1950
(indelible Paule Ingrand studio stamp)
Artist: Paule Ingrand (1910-1997)
(work belonging to the graphic work of the couple Paule and Max Ingrand)
Technique: Pastel, colored pencil and graphite on paper
Dimensions: 30 × 23.5 cm
Signature / Inscriptions:
• Red studio stamp characteristic “PAULE INGRAND”
• Red stylized emblem (studio seal)
Period / Style: Art Deco – circa 1940-1950
Intense and expressive study of a bird with wings spread, treated in a palette of warm earth tones (orange, red, purple) contrasted with deep blacks. The circular eye, hooked beak and powerful talons give the figure an almost totemic presence, at once primitive and refined.
The drawing, executed with a free hand and direct gesture from the artist: pastel smudging, color overlays, energetic outlines.
This studio sheet fits into the decorative research of the Ingrand couple, where the stylized animal (often loaded with symbolism) served as a motif for panels, engraved glass decorative works, or monumental projects.
Paule Ingrand, draughtswoman and fresco painter trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs, brought this graphic force and sensitivity to color. Max Ingrand, master glassmaker, frequently ensured the technical transfer. Together they developed a decorative language at the crossroads of Art Deco, modernism, and influences from non-Western sources.
A small work of great visual intensity, a rare testimony to the preparatory work of the Ingrand studio. Ideal for collectors of Art Deco and 20th-century graphic arts.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Some signs of wear and light stains on the verso, consistent with a studio sheet.
Sold unframed.
