"Striated Guardians"
This work presents a formal and allegorical portrait of two stylized felines. It explores the duality of identity, the wild cat and domestication, the organic form and the geometric pattern, control and spontaneity.
The piece is positioned within the contemporary Enlightenment movement and mid-20th-century graphic design. This influence is evident in the simplification of forms, textile patterns, and a flat, frontal composition that evokes a graphic poster.
The work sits at the intersection where decorative art and illustration merge to create an accessible yet profound visual narrative. Although executed in acrylic on canvas, the piece rejects the traditional material texture of the medium to embrace the transparency, fluidity, and luminosity of watercolor.
The canvas, a robust and textured surface, becomes a receptor for fine glazes and soft washes. This technique requires meticulous control to achieve defined contours and patterns, allows the background to reveal subtle gradations and transparencies that suggest an ethereal atmosphere, and suggests that the cats and the ornaments are overlapping, transparent constructions in dialogue with their surroundings. The solidity of the tabby cat contrasts with the lightness of the color application, creating a rich and attractive visual tension.
