Italian school (XX) - Madonna addolorata

Oil painting on canvas depicting the Our Lady of Sorrows in prayer. The work fully fits into the Italian sacred painting tradition between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, strongly influenced by the classical iconography of great masters such as Guido Reni and Sassoferrato.
​The composition shows the Madonna half-length, with her head covered by a white veil that frames her gaunt and absorbed face. The joined hands and the gaze turned upward impart to the scene an intense spiritual and emotional charge, characteristic of devotional painting of the era. The contrast between the sober tones of the garments and the dark background highlights the plasticity of the figure and the modeling of the face.

The work is presented in overall good conservation conditions. On the back of the canvas there are reinforcement patches testimony to past conservation interventions. The wooden frame’s backing frame has been reinforced on the back with brackets to ensure structural stability. The painting is offered accompanied by a gilded carved wooden frame.
