MENUKI (metal ornaments for the tsuka/handle of the Japanese sword, for Katana or Wakizashi)

Subject: Tora (Tiger)
A pair of tigers depicted in dynamic, sinuous poses with elongated bodies, incised stripes, and expressive details of the face and paws.

Probably Shakudo (a copper-gold alloy) or Yamagane / copper with a dark patina. Decoration in Zogan or Gilt (gold gilding) to highlight the tiger’s coat stripes, paws, and body details.

Working Technique:
(Udashidashi): Back-relief shaping to create body volume.
Takabori: High-relief carving on the front.
Keobori: Fine incisions to render coat details and whiskers.

Back Features:
Usu-dachi: Indicates a profile with a very thin metal edge and wall.

No rear peg in Atsumi-nashi

Case:
In a traditional wooden box (Kiri-bako/paulownia box) with padded support.
