Description from the seller
Opere di S. Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori – complete edition in 10 volumes, Naples 1871
Rare and valuable complete edition of the Works of Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori (1696-1787), Doctor of the Church and founder of the Redemptorists, printed in Naples in 1871 by the Office of ascetical and preachable books (Strada Guantai Nuovi – Stufa S. Giorgio dei Genovesi).
The set includes:
• Vols. 1-4 – Ascetical Works (including Le Glorie di Maria, Apparecchio alla Morte, Reflections and Affections on the Passion of Jesus Christ, The True Bride of Jesus Christ and other works of spirituality)
• Vols. 5-7 – Moral Works (The Moral Theology complete with dissertations and annotations)
• Vol. 8 – Dogmatic Works (including the History of Heresies and the Brief Dissertation against the errors of modern unbelievers)
• Vol. 9 – Italian Moral Works (instructions and practices for confessors)
• Vol. 10 – Life and Institute of Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori (biography of Father Antonio Maria Tannoia)
Format 24 × 16 cm approximately, original red cloth binding with titles and gold tooling to the spines. A complete copy of all ten volumes, with ex-libris of Henri Moissonnier.
Boards with normal signs of age; in volume 3 a small tear to the front board; volume 5 rebound in the opposite manner. Internals overall good, with the usual age-related stains and oxidations.
Naples edition of 1871 of notable rarity in complete form, particularly sought after by collectors of 19th-century theological and ascetical literature. The presence of the entire corpus (ascetical, moral, dogmatic, and biographical) in a single binding makes it a piece of great antiquarian and religious-historical interest.
