Description from the seller
CARBONE, Giunio.
Compendium of Ligurian History from its origins to 1814 with copper engravings. Genoa, by Emanuelle Carbone & Co., 1836-1837.
2 volumes in octavo (mm 155 × 105 bindings).
Pages 453, [2]; 746.
The engravings are not present; in fact there is only one plate.
Contemporary binding in cardboard covered with decorative paper on the boards (red floral motif on an ochre background), spines in parchment with raised ribs, scrolled ornaments and red leather inlays with titles and volume numbering stamped in gold (“G. CARBONE / STORIA LIGURE / VOL. I” and “VOL. II”).
First edition (originally issued in fascicles). A popularizing and educational work that traces the history of Liguria from the origins of the Ligurian peoples, through the Roman era, medieval times, and the long saga of the Republic of Genoa, up to 1814 (Vienna Congress and annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia). The text includes accounts of political and military events, notes on colonies and Genoese dominions, a chronological catalog of Ligurian Doges (perpetual and biennial), chronological indexes, and a reflective concluding section.
A juvenile work by the Genoese poet and popularizer Giunio Carbone (Genoa 1805 – Florence 1881), one of the early nineteenth-century syntheses of modern, accessible regional history of Liguria. This present copy is rare to find, albeit with a single plate, and preserves the full text and the period binding.
Of definite interest to collectors of Genovese and Ligurian local history, as well as for the history of pre-unification regional historiography.
