Description from the seller
Very beautiful statue of a late 15th-century soldier with a crossbow. The statue is most likely made of bronze patinated steel and is very likely made in France, in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The sculpture sits on a wooden base and, including the base, is 34 cm high, 14 cm wide and deep, and weighs about 1.6 kg.
The style of the statue could be described as Neo-Renaissance or Romantic. This was an art movement in the 19th century in which artists and factories heavily looked back to the past. Because the statue depicts a soldier from the 17th or 18th century but was made around 1900, it is a textbook example of Historicism. At the time, people were fascinated by the 'golden ages' and the heroic aesthetics of the past.
Very beautiful is the fairly detailed way in which the statue has been cast. You can see the tiniest button on the trousers, or the soldier's little mustache. The patina is also very beautiful. You can see the brown of the bronze and the green of the patina on it; very beautiful!
The statue will be carefully wrapped and insured for shipment.
