Description from the seller
Magnificent Italian Renaissance chest, dating from the 16th century, of Venetian origin.
This large cedar wood chest, both carved and pyrograved, is an extremely rare piece.
In this period in Europe, cedar wood was a very rare and luxurious material, imported mainly by Venetian merchants from the Levant. Valued for its natural resistance to insects, its pleasant fragrance, and exceptional durability, it was reserved for the most prestigious pieces. The contrast between the warm wood with deep red-brown hues and the black-stained period frame highlights the richness of its decoration.
The entire piece is carved and pyrograved with figures, animals, coats of arms, landscapes, vegetation, arabesques, and scenes of life—motifs typical of the narrative art of Venetian Renaissance.
The facade presents three large richly ornamented rectangular panels. The inside of the lid is also entirely pyrograved: it offers a remarkable composition consisting of three central circular medallions surrounded by geometric and floral friezes. These medallions feature radiating rosettes, star motifs, and fine floral and vegetal elements. The interior of the chest has been waxed, giving it a beautiful warm patina and extra protection.
The chest still retains its two wide wrought-iron hinges original to it.
Despite its great age, the pyrography, although partly eroded over time, remains visible on almost the entire facade of the chest, offering a clear and seductive reading of its decorations.
Traditionally offered at weddings in large Italian families, this type of chest was used to store the bride’s trousseau while asserting the prestige of the household. This Venetian cedar specimen preserves a beautiful authentic patina from the XVIth century, with the natural wear of a piece that has crossed nearly five centuries. Its structure remains solid and its decorations retain a strong presence.
