Napoleon: 1814, the Campaign in France

The book is devoted to the so-called “Six Days’ Campaign” and the desperate defense on French soil. Although Napoleon was numerically drastically outnumbered and his army consisted largely of raw recruits, this campaign is regarded militarily as one of his tactical masterworks.

The Allied invasion: After the loss of Germany, the Allied troops cross the Rhine.
Napoleon’s stroke of genius: With a small but extremely mobile force he maneuvers between the separated Allied armies of Blücher (Silesian Army) and Schwarzenberg (main army). He defeats them in rapid succession at Champaubert, Montmirail, Château-Thierry, and Vauchamps.
The bitter end: Despite these spectacular individual victories, the sheer mass of the coalition forces crushes the French defense.
The volume recounts in detail the betrayal and the fall of Paris, Napoleon’s retreat to Fontainebleau, and finally his first abdication in April 1814.

Illustrations: It contains 438 illustrations, 47 of which are in color. In addition to contemporary engravings, the focus here is on the outstanding, historically accurate uniform plates by Lucien Rousselot and Henri Bidault.
Documentation: Like its predecessor, the book shines with gapless battle orders (Ordres de bataille) of all participating French and Allied units.
