Description:
Great Baroque curiosity of the Petron reception. The rare and sought-after medical-philosophical commentary edition by Johann Peter Lotichius. This monumental work represents one of the most fascinating and unusual milestones in the editorial history of the ancient picaresque novel. The German physician and philologist Johann Peter Lotichius (1598–1669) here adopts a radically new, interdisciplinary approach: he examines the famous decadence, sexual debauchery, and proverbial gluttony of the Nero era—as depicted in the Banquet of Trimalchio—not only with the tools of classical philology but primarily dissects them from the perspective of the Baroque physician. His extensive medical-philosophical excursuses illuminate the ancient vices and orgies pathologically, making the volume an invaluable source for the history of culture and medicine in the early 17th century.
Condition:
Leather binding stained, hinges brittle, rubbed and bumped. Paper-due as usual uniformly browned and stained. Overall a good copy of the sought-after and rare edition
