Augustine wrote the original work of 'XXII. Books of the City of God' between 413 and 426 AD in response to the plundering of Rome by the Visigoths in 410. He defends Christianity against the accusation that it caused the fall of the Roman Empire. The book describes the universal struggle between two 'cities': the earthly city (focused on power and self-love) and the City of God (focused on the spiritual and divine).

Augustine of Hippo, also known as Saint Augustine, (354-430) was bishop of Hippo, theologian, philosopher and Church Father. He is regarded as the most important Church Father of the West. His most famous works include the Confessiones and De civitate Dei.

Augustine was born and died in the then Christianized Western Roman province of Africa, today northeast Algeria and northern Tunisia, in the Aures mountains. He was born in the town of Tagaste (present-day Souk-Ahras) as the son of the Roman councilor Patricius and the Numidian Monica, a devout Christian woman.[7] He identified himself mainly as a Numidian who spoke Latin.[8] He also identified with the ancient Amazigh, Berbers.

His parents were not wealthy but nevertheless tried to give him the best education of the time. Augustine enjoyed primary and secondary education in Thagaste and Madaura. After the early death of his father, his mother Monica supported by others allowed him to study. He received instruction in rhetoric at Madaura and Carthage. To the sorrow of his mother Monica, Augustine in his youth initially led a life deemed debauched by Christians. Later Augustine wrote in his Confessiones that as a student he found himself in a “confusion of shameless loves.” He meant by this, according to professor Hans van Oort, homosexual loves.[9] At 17 he began a relationship with a young girl.[10] They had a son in 372, Adeodatus (
