Description:
Very rare early Italian translation of the knightly romance (Italian edition 1551) of the 16th century. It is the translation of a portion of the famous Spanish novel cycle Amadís de Gaula. At the center of the plot are Don Rogel of Greece (the son of Florisel) and Agesilaus (also known as the Second Agesilaus or Agesilaus of Colchos). Agesilaus falls irretrievably in love with his own cousin, Diana. To be near her, he disguises himself as a woman and calls himself "Daraida". Rogel of Greece, in turn, also falls in love with this supposed woman ("Daraida"), which leads to extremely complex, comic and dramatic entanglements. In addition to the love intrigues there are the knightly adventures: battles against giants, breaking magical spells, tournaments and epic battles to defend the Christian Empire of Constantinople against heathen armies. The Amadís de Gaula cycle was the absolute bestseller in the 16th century and Europe’s greatest media phenomenon. The books functioned like a lifestyle manual for European nobility. At the court of France or in the Italian republics, people learned from these books how a perfect cavalier should behave, speak, and love. The novels were read so obsessively and their plots so fantastic and absurd (with wizards, flying islands, and dragons) that Miguel de Cervantes parodied them in 1605. In Don Quixote it is precisely this craving for books like Amadís and Feliciano de Silva’s works that drives him mad.

Condition:
Binding somewhat soiled, edges expertly lined, ties renewed, spine plaque renewed in period style. Paper very clean, minutely browned, minimally speckled, title somewhat soiled and marginally frayed. A good copy of the very rare title.

Keywords: chivalric romance, Don Quijote, Spain, Greece, Mediterranean, knights
