2. Description
Elegant floral still life by Francesc Domingo i Segura, featuring a abundant bouquet of white, pink and red carnations arranged in a refined carved crystal vase.
The composition unfolds on a polished wooden table, whose surface partially reflects both the container and a fallen flower in the foreground. This small detail constitutes one of the most attractive resources of the work and demonstrates the artist’s care for light effects, transparency, and reflection.
The bouquet rises vertically, occupying almost the entire pictorial field. The chromatic concentration of the flowers contrasts with a sober background built with gray-green and bluish tones, allowing pinks, crimsons, and whites to acquire an intense visual presence.
This is a painting especially balanced, in which floral exuberance is contained by an orderly and elegant composition.
3. Stylistic and compositional analysis
Francesc Domingo was a figure of Catalan painting in the 20th century, initially trained within the Noucentisme milieu, whose evolution later incorporated elements of Cézanne and a modern figurative construction with greater solidity. The Institut d’Estudis Catalans also highlights the influence of Isidre Nonell within his artistic formation.
In this work, however, Domingo deliberately adopts an intimate and decorative register.
The bouquet is built through a sequence of short, dense brushstrokes. The carnations are not resolved petal by petal with botanical precision, but through small layers of pigment superimposed, effectively reproducing the wavy and fragmented character of these flowers.
The color range is carefully graduated. The pinks range from pale tones to intense crimsons; the whites contain yellow, green, and blue hues; and the red flowers function as depth accents.
Particularly interesting is the handling of the crystal. The artist virtually eliminates the physical body of the vase and reconstructs it with white, green, and blue reflections, allowing the stems to be seen inside.
The table, by contrast, introduces a broad warm surface of ochres and earth tones that balances the cool tones of the background.
4. Sensory and poetic dimension
The composition possesses a clear domestic and intimate quality.
This is not a solemn or overloaded still life, but a seemingly simple scene: freshly arranged flowers in a vase, softly illuminated in an interior.
The flower fallen on the table takes on special importance. In addition to visually balancing the composition, it introduces a note of temporality: against the exuberance of the bouquet, that isolated flower discretely recalls the ephemeral nature of floral beauty.
The reflection of the flower and the vase on the polished surface further multiplies the presence of the objects and gives the lower part of the painting notable visual richness.
5. Signature and authorship
The work bears the signature “F. Domingo” in the lower left corner.
This abbreviated form of the signature is coherent with other works attributed and marketed under Francesc Domingo Segura. Auction archives show, for example, still lifes by the artist also registered as signed “F. Domingo.”
The correct Catalan name is Francesc Domingo i Segura, born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in São Paulo in 1974. The Getty ULAN also lists as variants the names Francisco Domingo, Francesco Domingo, and Francisco Domingo Segura, so those forms can also be found in bibliography and international markets.
For cataloging we will use the historically most precise form:
Francesc Domingo i Segura (1893–1974).
6. Other points of interest
Domingo produced extensively, including painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, and ceramics. His career traverses some of the main renewal movements in Catalan art in the first half of the 20th century.
Among his works are documented various still lifes, a genre to which this piece belongs. The Institut d’Estudis Catalans lists, among others, Natura morta amb pomes from the 1920s, while market archives document other bodegones signed by the artist.
The work is presented with a wide gilded frame of stepped moldings and an inner textile mat, a set that considerably enhances its decorative presence.
Because of its dimensions, condition, and chromatic appeal, it is a work very suitable for both collection and interior decoration.
7. Shipping and terms
The work will be shipped by a professional specialized company, using high-security packing, a custom-made box, and foam protections, with the aim of ensuring maximum safety during transport.
We ship internationally to everywhere.
For shipments outside the European Union, to certain international destinations, or pieces that require special packaging, additional shipping, customs, or import costs may be incurred, which will be borne by the buyer.
