Original oil painting on canvas titled Catalunya!, created in 1977 (period 1970–1980), by École Abstraite Catalane (c. 1970), 60 × 82 cm, 3 kg, hand-signed, sold with frame in Spain by Galería.
Description from the seller
- Oil and pictorial material on canvas. Original signed canvas.
- In the nationalist and mythical narrative about the genesis of Catalonia, it seems impossible to detach the plastic violence of this 1977 composition from the legendary founding of the Quatre Barres. The historiographical tradition—popularized in Romanticism and alive in the collective imagination—tells how the Frankish king Charles the Bald, after a bloody battle against the Normans, dipped his fingers into the mortal wounds of Count Guifré el Pilós (Wifredo the Velloso) to trace, with the hero’s blood still warm on his gold shield, the four gules bands that would give rise to the Senyera. In this material painting, the technique of rough impasto and direct application with a spatula seems to reinterpret that epic and visceral gesture: the red matter is not only pigment, but the very representation of the bloodshed that drips and adheres violently to the golden background.
- Dimensions of the image without frame: 41 x 63 cm / 60 x 82 cm with exclusive custom frame.
