Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Asmat double ancestor figure from Papua, West Papua, carved in dense black wood, 93 cm high, 12 cm wide and 4 cm deep, dating to the second half of the 20th century, with Original/official authenticity and provenance from a private collection in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This impressive double ancestor figure originates from the Asmat region of West Papua. Carved from dense, heavy black wood, the sculpture depicts two connected ancestral figures and has a powerful, monumental presence. The compact composition and dark surface give the object a particularly archaic character, while the considerable weight of the wood contributes to its substantial appearance.
Ancestor figures occupied an important place within traditional Asmat culture. They expressed the continuing relationship between the living and the deceased and helped preserve the memory and presence of earlier generations. The double representation may suggest a close ancestral connection, although its precise meaning cannot be established without information about the original village and context.
