Johan Moorman - La Ciudad

Johan Moorman (1979) developed his artistic practice in the dynamic city of Eindhoven. In the nineties he began as a graffiti artist, and since then he has continually experimented, without limiting himself to one specific style or medium.

His artistic development was shaped in part by the technologically advanced environment in which he grew up and by his later education at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. These influences have strongly determined his view of art and his way of working.

Moorman is inspired by diverse sources, from arcade games, M.C. Escher and Lego to De Stijl, Pop Art and the Memphis Group. In his work these references come together in a timeless visual language, in which moments seem frozen in an adventurous, playful environment.

The interaction between objects, shapes and spaces invites the viewer to step into an imaginary universe. His multidisciplinary approach to creativity is expressed in the way he weaves together different styles and influences. From the recognizable aesthetics of classic arcade games to avant-garde design: Moorman combines elements of Anti-Design with a sense of elegance and thus creates spatial worlds that transcend the boundaries of conventional imagery.
