Joannis Freind Opera Omnia Medica, published by Guillelmum Cavelier in Paris in 1735, is a Latin, posthumously issued second edition of John Freind's medical writings, comprising 620 pages, 26 cm high, bound in full leather with a five-rib spine and gilt-titled title and author, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Full leather binding, somewhat worn, with corners and hinges.
Back with 5 raised bands with decorations, title and author in gold.
Flyleaf, 1 blank page, lvi, 232, 388, [2], 1 blank page, flyleaf
The second edition (the first is 1733) of John Freind's medical writings, published posthumously; the texts originally written in English (including his most famous work, the History of Physick) were translated into Latin by his friends and executors of his will. Freind (1675-1728) was one of the talented young students whom the head of Christ Church, Henry Aldrich, involved in producing editions of classical texts (he edited works by Demosthenes and Ovid); however, he soon devoted himself to medicine, leaving a lasting legacy especially as the author of the History of Physick, a work that remained a fundamental reference for many years.
Frontispiece in two colors, red and black, with typographic ornament. Headpieces, decorated initial capitals, and tailpieces engraved along the volume. Marbled endpapers, ex libris affixed to the first of these. Small marginal tear on pp. 205-207. Very few leaves somewhat browned. Moreover, the inside copy is almost untrimmed. Very clean, usable and complete.
