Johan Moorman - It goes downhill before we go uphill

Statement by Johan;

'Last week, in my dream I relived an experience from a couple of years ago;
My wife and I were driving through the south of France on a beautiful, sunny day. We passed through all kinds of colorful fields and didn’t see anyone else for hours. The road was very steep and exciting to drive, and you could only see what lied ahead until the next hill. After this dream, I wanted to paint a picture. I drew a bold composition with not too many details, which appears flat. At the same time, I also wanted to give the image a lot of perspective, so I drew the same car multiple times from different angles.'

Johan Moorman (1979) developed his artistic practice in the dynamic city of Eindhoven. In the nineties he began as a graffiti artist, and since then he has continually experimented, without restricting himself to one specific style or medium.
His artistic development was shaped in part by the technologically progressive environment in which he grew up and by his later training at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. These influences have strongly shaped his view of art and his way of working.
Moorman draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from arcade games, M.C. Escher and Lego to De Stijl, Pop Art and the Memphis Group. In his work these references come together in a timeless visual language, in which moments seem to be frozen in an adventurous, playful setting.
The interaction between objects, forms and spaces invites the viewer to step into an imaginary universe. His multidisciplinary approach to creativity is reflected in the way he weaves together different styles and influences. From the recognizable aesthetics of classic arcade games to avant-garde design: Moorman combines elements of Anti-Design with a sense of elegance, creating spatial worlds that transcend the boundaries of conventional visual language.
