Description:
A high-grade, collectible two-piece graphic art diptych celebrating two monumental pioneers of the Golden Age of American newspaper comic strips: Winsor McCay and George McManus.
Both works were published in 1989 in France by R.M.P. Conseil / Archives Internationales as part of the esteemed graphic portfolio "Collection Archives Secrètes", reproducing historic original panels with archival print quality on heavyweight art stock.
• The Two Included Masterworks (35 x 50 cm each):
Winsor McCay – "Little Nemo in Slumberland" (1906 / Issued 1989)
A theatrical, dreamlike scene rendered in McCay’s hallmark Art Nouveau / Clear Line aesthetic. Little Nemo reclines upon his elevated throne, while an acrobatic court figure in a pointed hat gestures above the mischief-maker Flip, who peeks out from a trapdoor with his cigar.
Features plate-signature "Winsor McCay" in the lower-right foreground, the stylized title lettering "NEMO" in the lower border, and the official publication line: "WINSOR MC CAY 1906 ARCHIVES INTERNATIONALES 1989".
George McManus – "Bringing Up Father" / "Illico" (1941 / Issued 1989)
Classic mid-century Art Deco composition starring the iconic Jiggs (known in France as "Illico"), briskly strolling down a city avenue with his cigar, bowler hat, walking stick, and packed suitcase against a skyline of towering skyscrapers and a vintage red automobile.
Shows the artist's printed signature "GEO MCMANUS" in the lower-left corner of the illustration, a French dialogue caption below the panel, and the publisher credit: "ILLICO. GÉO MAC MANUS 1941 K.F.S. 1989 R.M.P. CONSEIL ARCHIVES INTERNATIONALES 1989, COLLECTION ARCHIVES SECRÈTES".
• Printing & Paper Quality:
Original vintage offset lithography on thick, heavy satin-matte art paper stock (pale ice-blue border for McCay; warm cream border for McManus). Crisp black ink linework and rich, saturated period color fields.
