Pierre de Berroeta (1914–2004) – Horseman Figure – Signed Original Gouache
Description
Signed original gouache by Pierre de Berroeta (1914–2004), Franco-Argentine artist recognized for his pictorial work and for his substantial activity as a painter-cartoonist in the tapestry field.
This composition depicts a rider and his horse at the heart of stylized vegetation, in a palette particularly rich and luminous dominated by blues, greens, yellows, reds and blacks.
The work bears witness to the very personal figurative language developed by Berroeta: simplified and geometrized forms, assertive outlines, flat areas of color and construction close to Cubism, characteristics of his figurative production.
The subject and construction of this gouache are particularly interesting with regard to Berroeta's work for tapestry. The artist produced numerous cartoons and compositions intended to be transposed into tapestries by various French workshops, notably in Aubusson.
This work could thus correspond to a study or preparatory composition in relation to his cartonnier work, although no specific tapestry made after this gouache has been identified to date. This hypothesis is therefore presented with caution.
