Born in 1881 in Montfort-sur-Risle, René Sautin belongs to that generation of Norman painters who turned their homeland into a true laboratory of light and modernity. Trained at the Beaux-Arts of Rouen in Philippe Zacharie’s studio, then in Paris with Gabriel Ferrier, he received early encouragement from Albert Lebourg, a compatriot and major figure of Norman Impressionism.
Settling in Les Andelys from 1911, Sautin found on the banks of the Seine his most intimate source of inspiration: Château-Gaillard, the quays of Petit-Andely, the barges gliding on the water… These motifs he revisits tirelessly, with a vibrant sensitivity and a singular expressive force.
