Description from the seller
Title
Terracotta Hercules bust
Large, patinated terracotta Hercules bust – attributed to the late 18th century
Description
Important sculptural bust depicting Farnese Hercules, characterized by strong expressive intensity and particularly vigorous modelling of the face, the hairstyle, and the beard.
The work features a brown-bronze patina that accentuates the volumes and gives the surface an antique, tactile appearance. Of particular interest are the monumentality of the face, the pronounced chiaroscuro of the masses, and the rich work detailing the beard, composed of deeply modelled tufts.
For stylistic and technical characteristics, the work is attributable to the late 18th to early 19th century, in the absence of signature or documentation that would allow a definitive dating.
The bust comes from an old residence that belonged in the last century to a priest and remained for a long time in the same private context.
The piece shows signs of time, abrasions, small cracks and natural irregularities of the surface, visible in the photographs and consistent with its age and the technique of creation. These elements contribute to the object’s historic and decorative character.
Material: patinated terracotta
Era attributed: late 18th – early 19th century
Dimensions: approximately 43 × 36 × 33 cm, weight about 40 kg
Provenance: Italian private collection, from the residence of a priest in the 20th century.
Sculpture of notable stage presence, suitable for an ancient sculpture collection, a Wunderkammer, or a setting with a particularly historic and decorative character.
Given the delicacy and fragility of the work
Necessary packing with a wooden crate
