Jan (Johannes) Theuns (1877-1961) - Portret van een oude man met baard

Atmospheric and imposing portrait of an old man with a beard by Dutch painter Jan Theuns (1877–1961). Oil on panel. The painting is executed in oil on panel and measures about 74 × 54 cm including the frame. It is set in a broad black frame that harmonizes excellently with the dark, classical character of the subject. The painting and the frame are in good condition with signs of aging.

Theuns was known for his great admiration for the painting of the Dutch 17th century and, in particular, for Rembrandt. That influence is clearly recognizable in this work. The old man is depicted against a deep, dark background, with warm and concentrated light falling on the face, the white hair, and the long beard.

Particularly beautiful is the rendering of the characterful countenance. The strong chiaroscuro, warm brown and gold tones, and the deep red cloak give the painting the aura of an old master portrait. Especially the meticulous treatment of hair and beard and the penetrating gaze of the subject draw the viewer's attention.
