Landscape with a watercourse and meadows under a cloudy sky. In the foreground a ditch or stream, with on the left a few characteristic trees and in the background a wide, flat landscape. Painted in subdued green, blue, ocher and brown tones, with a loose impressionistic brushwork.

The painting shows a calm, rural landscape, probably in a Dutch or Northwest European setting.

In the foreground lies a narrow watercourse or ditch, with marshy meadows behind it.
On the left stand a few tall, slender trees that strongly define the image. In the middle and background there are low meadows, fields and scattered trees. The horizon is kept low, giving the expansive sky much space. The sky is cloudy and has warm yellow, beige and gray tones, while the landscape mainly consists of green, blue-gray, ocher and brown. The painter worked with loose, visible brushstrokes, especially in the water, grass and trees.

Suspected maker is Frans de Groote from Anzegem (born 1926), this cannot be stated with certainty!, but this is the most plausible explanation. I say this in connection with the working method, signature and the painter's life period. They match 1 to 1. It would fit with the surroundings and with other paintings by him. The painting is without certificate and comes from my own collection.

De Groote is in sources referred to as an artist from Anzegem. A concrete clue is his studio “Landergem” in Anzegem.

The municipality of Anzegem also mentions him as a painter. In 2020 two paintings by Frans De Groote were donated to the municipality. The municipality then had these works inventoried and registered as part of local heritage.

The technique is refined and the painting is surrounded by a beautiful, sturdy frame.
