Description from the seller
Edgar Scauflaire (1893–1960) — Gypsy, 1921
Original drawing in pencil and dry pastel on kraft paper, signed and dated “Scauflaire 1921”.
This portrait depicts a young woman with her face slightly turned toward the viewer. Executed on warm-toned kraft paper, the drawing combines the precision of graphite with touches of dry pastel that subtly color the face and hair. The overall work preserves a great simplicity of facture, with a particularly expressive presence despite the relatively intimate format of the sheet.
The drawing is executed on kraft paper measuring about 21 × 21.5 cm, itself mounted on a larger backing sheet. There is no mat: the surrounding support of the kraft directly forms part of the presentation. The inner frame size is about 26 × 31 cm and the overall piece is presented in a sober and elegant frame of 37.5 × 42 cm.
Dated 1921, this drawing belongs to the early years of Edgar Scauflaire’s career, a period during which the artist accorded significant importance to drawing and specifically worked with graphite and pastel. This early period is particularly interesting in his artistic development, before the more pronounced evolution of his pictorial research in the following years.
