About the print
In Japan the narcissus (suisen) is a winter flower. It blooms from December into February, when little else is in flower, and is traditionally used in New Year arrangements. It has a long history in Japanese painting and flower-and-bird subjects, and it counts as a seasonal emblem of the cold months.
Tokuriki Tomikichirō came from a Kyoto family of painters serving the Hongan-ji; he was its twelfth generation. He became one of the leading figures of modern Kyoto printmaking and founded the publishing house Matsukyū after the war. Next to his landscapes and Kyoto views, he made flower subjects in a decorative style that draws on his training in traditional painting. The same design exists with a printed signature only. This impression is signed by hand in pencil.
