Description from the seller

Oil on canvas depicting Saint John the Baptist as a youth (traditionally called San Giovannino), portrayed in three-quarter bust and oriented in a half-profile. The young Saint, characterized by tender, boyish features and a fine nimbus above the head, is partially cloaked in camel-hair and wrapped in a vibrant bright red cloak, a symbol of his future martyrdom.

With his left hand he holds the typical childhood staff in the shape of a cross (its upper end hinting at the fillet), while to his right emerges from the darkness of the composition the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei), his principal iconographic attribute. The scene is enveloped in a nocturnal or woodland atmosphere, where the dark, subdued background contrastively highlights the flesh tones and the red of the drapery (chiaroscuro).

Style and Period
The work situates itself within the tradition of Italian sacred painting and is dated to the late 17th and 18th centuries (Italian School) of Neapolitan origin. The facial expression, chiaroscuro treatment, and the softness of the lines reflect the influence of Baroque painting.

Condition and Technical Notes
Support: Oil on canvas. The original canvas shows signs of age, consistent with the period.
Back: On the reverse the work presents on its antique wooden frame. Clearly visible are three old restoration inserts/patches (two at the top, one at the bottom), applied to consolidate and repair old cuts or flaking of the paint layer, a common conservation intervention for artifacts of this era.
Surface: Displays a widespread and fascinating craquelure from aging and oxidation of the protective varnish. Some old touch-ups contemporaneous with the restorations on the back are visible. A professional cleaning could restore full brightness to the colors, particularly the flesh tones and the background.
Frame: The work is presented within an antique or later wooden frame, entirely lacquered in a bright green shade, which enhances its rustic and period character.
Canvas measurements: only the canvas 73 x 56 cm approximately, with frame 77 x 60 cm.
The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and is not part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid ground for claims or order cancellations.
